Carinoid Tumors of Intestines Reports of Twp Cases

Abstract
Malignant carcinoid tumor of colon is rare.. The patient. was a 57-year-old woman. She had a one year history,of cramping abdominal pain; constipation and abdominal distension. Admission physical examination showed her to be markedly obese. A large, firm, irregular mass was palpable in the lower abdomen, and ascites -was noted. :Exploratory laparotomy was performed on Aug. 27, 1962. Approximately 7,000 cc. yellow clear ascites was¢¥ sucked out. Masses of omentum, mesenteric masses, the terminal¢¥ ileum, appendix, cecum, ascending colon and right half of transverse colon were resected and ileocolic continuity was- restored by a side-to-side anastomosis. The removed omental masses weighed 1,510 Gm. The terminal ileum and appendix were normal. There were multiple, firm, rubbery, yellow, ¢¥not encapsulated but well circumscribed masses. 0.5-4.0 cm. in diameters, were found in the submucosa and muscularis, covered with smooth mucosa and thickened peritoneum along the wall of cecum and colon. Pathological diagnosis from Leroy H. Dart, Major, MC, [Chief,. Laboratory, 121 Evacuation Hospital, was malignant carcinoid. Her follow up examination was done in October 1962. Wheezes in the chest and a loud blowing systolic murmur along the left sternal border were heard. Chest roentgenogram revealed dilated heart. The liver and intraperitoneal masses were papable. She slowly deteriorated and died on November 27, 1962 (Fig. 1,2,3). A case of appendiceal carcinoid tumor of a 38-year-old man is also presented.
